PRACTISING AHIMSA WHEN BUYING YOGA LEGGINGS AND SHORTS
When Yogis think of the word Ahimsa, the first of the Yamas in Patanjali’s 8 limbs of yoga, they think of non-violence, or not injuring or harming any living thing. A broader translation from Sanskrit extends the meaning to non-violence of mind, body and spirit. Either way, many yogis don’t connect the idea of Ahimsa to what they wear to their yoga class.

Many leggings and shorts designed as yoga wear are made from materials that harm the environment. Most synthetic (nylon, Supplex, Lycra, polypropylene) yoga pants are made from plastic that is produced by petrochemical companies. Plastic takes hundreds of years to break down, contains toxins, and the production of it is toxic to the environment. If you wish to buy synthetic yoga leggings and shorts, buy ones made from post-consumer recycled plastic bottles. This can help keep plastic out of the oceans, reduce petrochemical companies’ plastic production, and delay plastic entering landfill. Not perfect, but it buys time for more research into non-toxic ways to deal with plastic waste, or for governments to introduce legislation to reduce the production and use of plastic.

Leggings and shorts made from rayon or viscose also harm the environment because the wood pulp they are made from is treated with toxic chemicals such as caustic soda, which is washed out into the waterways. The best alternative to rayon leggings and shorts when considering Ahimsa, is Tencel, or lyocell. Tencel is also made from wood pulp, but it uses less toxic chemicals in it’s production and 99.5% of those chemicals are recycled in what is known as the ‘Closed loop’ system.

While bamboo may be a good choice for those wishing to practice Ahimsa, most bamboo yarn is made using toxic chemicals washed out into waterways. Some bamboo fabric producers are starting to use the closed loop system so it is always a good idea to ask before purchasing bamboo leggings and shorts.

Do your research before buying yoga leggings and shorts, and you are one step closer to Ahimsa.
